The MARM ensure the irrigation of crops in the irrigation of Moratalla with the implementation of the well drying Alhárabe (Murcia) (13/11/2008)

The general director of Water, Ministry of Environment and Rural and Marine Affairs (MARM), Marta Moreno has presided over the implementation of drought Alhárabe well to ensure the irrigation of crops River Irrigation Community Alhárabe, in Moratalla (Murcia).

The ceremony was also attended by, among other authorities, the Government Delegate, Rafael González Tovar, the president of the Hydrographic Confederation of Segura (CHS), José Salvador Fuentes Zorita, the president of the Commonwealth Taibilla Channel, Isidoro Carrillo, and Mayor Moratalla, Juan Llorente.

The survey, whose investment amounts to 423,130 euros available to farmers in the Irrigation Community Alhárabe river flow of 50 liters per second to carry out their crops.

Since 2005, the MARM has invested a total of 49.22 million euros in the creation of the Strategic Battery Surveys (BES) of the Segura basin, the first run with a criterion of sustainable management of groundwater resources , which ensures a flow to irrigators in the basin during periods of drought under strict control of the exploitation of aquifers.

The BES is composed of more than a hundred dry wells distributed over the provinces of Albacete, Murcia and Alicante to ensure urban water supply and environmental flow to traditional irrigation and irrigation of the basin and the Tajo -Segura.

The volume of water extracted from these surveys, since 2005, has risen to 381 cubic hectometres (hm 3), of which 19 percent (74 hm 3) were intended to supply, by 46% (172 hm 3) the traditional irrigation 35% (135 hm 3) to irrigators the Tajo-Segura.

In terms of investment, 37% is dedicated to the drilling of boreholes (18.21 million euros), 54% (26.58 million) for electrification, operation and maintenance of wells, and the remaining 9% (4.42 million euros) to the remote control and remote control, a system being installed progressively and will allow the CHS staff manage all probes from a central office located in the body.

In addition, the BES has been implemented under strict operational criteria, as shown by the fact that all surveys have installed a piezometer to determine the oscillations of the aquifers, warning of sudden drops in the water table.

Thus, the CHS stop the exploitation of polls during periods of rainfall, as of October, allowing the recharging of groundwater bodies to its new launch in irrigation periods or when circumstances require it.

Pozo del Alhárabe

The survey launched today, nearly 400 meters deep, can reconcile environmental applications, the recovery of the natural heritage of Murcia and in particular the residents of Moratalla, sustainable irrigation and town, as replacing the well two of the Community of Irrigators which severely affected the thermal pool Somogil.

This upwelling thermal well again in late 2004 after being dry for nearly 20 years.

At that time, the board of the Community Irrigation and River CHS Alhárabe studied alternatives to reconcile the irrigation of 1,000 hectares of apricot and olive trees, with the maintenance and recovery of the precious natural upwelling.

Somogil The pond is within the Barranco de Hondares, Alhárabe River tributary, near the Camping La Puerta.

In its spring fund between 5 and 10 liters per second, almost pure water, high quality chemistry and a temperature of 25 degrees Celsius.

Traditionally, Moratalla neighbors have gone to bathe in its waters during the summer and even winter.

During the summer, whole families camped out for days in the environment to enjoy the healing properties of its waters, as the locals say the water from this pond cure certain skin diseases (eczema and psoriasis).

Therefore, CHS has committed to this wonder of nature back to dry, for which, since 2005 been carrying out various actions aimed at their ultimate recovery.

Benefits for irrigators Moratalla

In addition to this survey and that is running the CHS for irrigators Benamor River, also in Moratalla, the MARM has performed more actions to ensure the water flows to farmers moratalleros like desembalsando Dam of Risca, conducted during last spring, which was an emergency watering to help the River Irrigation Community Alhárabe to move forward with their spring crops, especially apricots and olives.

In this regard, the CHS decided to store water for irrigation in the reservoir during the past winter, with the aim that, in the spring irrigation season, desembalsando about 70 liters per second to reach 100,000 cubic meters, an amount guaranteed this community sufficient flow to the harvest in April, May and June.

Moreover, during 2007 the CHS made investments amounting to 60,000 euros for the irrigation of the town of Moratalla.

In particular, we proceeded to repair, waterproofing and cleaning of a ditch and even the demolition and reconstruction of some sections.

It also renewed various regulatory bodies and drainage management and optimizing the volume of water saving irrigation.

Also during 2008, has undertaken the reconstruction and covering a stretch of canal near the town of Moratalla, due to the weeds and wind-blown plastic, was readily muffle up (-clogging) with the subsequent flooding and losses water.

This investment, coupled with the protection of rubble held at the Left Bank Benamor, downstream of the dam Moratalla and the supply and installation of dividers, gates secondary distribution of irrigation community have an investment in the current year of 87,100 euros.
