The Minister of Agriculture and Water, Antonio Cerda, said today that "the sustainability of the olive grove in the Murcia region depends on the production of high quality oils differentiated" on the occasion of the presentation of the "VIII Conference of olive, oil olive oil and table olives' held in Moratalla and organized by the Ministry.
The owner of Agriculture noted that "the Ministry is promoting the continuous improvement of our olive oils, through the Food Quality Control Brand Murcia", within which are recognized the oils produced by the five mills in the region : Coamor, Olimendros, Hacienda San Miguel, oil and Olmo Lorna Vega.
The Department also promotes the improvement of oil through the Regional Tasting Panel, the Network Dacus control the olive fly, the program "Clean Agriculture", the Nutrition Improvement Olivar and training and technology transfer.
On the quality of the mill stands Deortegas, Yecla, organic oils which have been obtained between 2009 and 2012 a total of 17 awards in various competitions both nationally and internationally.
The focus of this conference has focused primarily on the issue of quality as a key element to enhance olive oils produced in the region and as leverage to achieve a sustainable structure of the olive grove.
The director of the Olive Oil Agency of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment, Carlos Sanchez, spoke of the current panorama of the world market and domestic olive oils, as well as the possibilities in a global market may have oils produced in our region.
Also held a panel discussion entitled 'Proceedings of the Department, companies and organizations to promote the consumption and enhance the quality extra virgin oils produced in the Region of Murcia', attended by technicians of the Ministry and members of the Panel of Tasters Virgin Olive Oil from the region of Murcia, as well as Olimendros SL and the brotherhood of 'Friends of Virgin Olive Oil'.
The objectives of the Ministry is that of supply, more so now, the consumption needs of the region itself, to ensure the continuity and profitability of our farms.
In this regard, the Minister stressed that "will enhance collaboration between farmers, companies involved in the production and distribution, and the hospitality industry, restaurants and similar establishments, to better promote to consumers the quality of our oils with differentiated quality ".
2011-2012 Campaign
Regional production of olive oil in this campaign has already surpassed the 8,000 tons, according to the Agency for olive oil.
The olive acreage for the production of olive oil is 21,925 hectares Of these, 3,011 are already in organic farming and integrated production in 1396.
The regional area of ​​orchard, complete with 1204 has engaged in the production of table olives (Cieza and Cuquillo Mollar, especially), of whom 11 in organic farming.
The region with the largest area of ​​olive groves is the Altiplano, with 8,828 ha, followed Guadalentín Valley, with 5,160 and Northwest, with 3,641, according to the latest regional agricultural statistics.
The predominant varieties are Cuquillo and Cornicabra, bound mainly to oil production.
In the Bajo Guadalentín in the last decade, has expanded the cultivation of olive trees, mostly with the variety Arbequina, in intensive plantations, because they allow mechanized harvesting at low cost and high yields per hectare recorded the first years of cultivation .
