CHRIST THE LIGHTNING:

"Suddenly a rallying cry and felt acute, and most of the faithful, blinded, buried his face in his hands! ...

>> In the midst of the temple, wielding the sword of the avenging angel, stirring with a proverbial light beam that threatened to annihilate all he seemed bound by an invisible force that kept him beyond the limits that had been laid down, roaring like a fiend, making contortions supernatural ...

That lasted briefly frightening scene, everyone thought his last moment came, when fast, crossing the espaco separating them falls covering the image of the Redeemer, who disappeared in the midst of the burning fire, quickly turned into thick smoke ...

>> With what words could be done to understand what happened in that sublime moment in which clear the dense fog, the image of Christ appeared, black and hot, but more beautiful than ever! ...

>> I had completely lost their color to get it back no more.

The people, humiliated, singing a hymn of praise and glory, the hymn that is sung when speaking a grateful heart! ...

That powerful human voice, formed by the union of so many anxieties, must get to heaven, and that silenced even the roar of the storm !..."

Alfredo Rubio: Things Moratalla, 1915

On June 15, 1621, before a storm of unprecedented violence, local people, gripped by fear, took refuge in the Church of the Assumption.

A powerful beam penetrated the roof, even without closing, and before the astonished eyes of the faithful, the spark was conducted to the image of Christ crucified, which guided the impact and the destructive power of lightning, saving people gathered there .

As relates Marcial García (Moratalla through the ages, Vol I, pp.332 et seq.), "Not misfortunes occur or burn the image, the people proclaimed miracle and the Council adopted, in gratitude, and festivals Day and Eve, being documented his conclusion from the following year, 1622 (...) The Baptism Book V of the miracle saves the data and so reminiscent of diligence in its original folio:

"In June fifteen thousand six hundred twenty-Vn years happened the Miracle of the Santo Christo del Rayo in this Parrochiale of Moratalla, and is noted in this book, the folio hundred and five, the buelta of Foxa, and to record, was ordered to put this right "

This is, therefore, the miracle that is celebrated this holiday in honor of Stmo since.

The main feature of the running of Moratalla, and what differentiates them from taking place in many other places, is that the cattle are driven "by verea" ie, off-road network along the creeks and trails, to the same municipality.

However, there is also a large number of parallel and complementary to these closures, as shown in the order of festivities.
