The Ministry of Water, Agriculture and the Environment has finalized the work to improve the forest systems of the public forest 'El Bebedor', in the municipality of Moratalla, which involved an investment of 211,700 euros, co-financed by EAFRD funds (63% ), The State (11.1 percent) and the Autonomous Community (25.90 percent).

The director general of Rural Development and Forestry, Federico García, stressed that the objective of this project has been "to effectively reduce the excess density of the forest, contribute to better conservation of vegetation, reduce disturbances that may occur For the environmental risks, as well as to foment the processes of ecological succession towards more developed forest systems ".

The Drinker covers an area of ​​1,600 hectares.

It is made up of valuable forest formations mixed with different pine species, with carrasco and pinaster pines, as well as oaks, accompanied by a rich underbrush where juniper, juniper and juniper are abundant, which in turn are the habitat of important faunistic populations, emphasizing the colony Of permanent nesting of the tawny vulture, of the eagle and the existence of important populations of mountain goat, among other species.

García Izquierdo also emphasized that "the location of this public hill, and the good communications existing, attribute a strategic nature to the aspects related to the defense and prevention of forest fires, research and training and dissemination in these areas."

Action

Among the works carried out are the silvicultural treatments that have been carried out on 66.67 hectares of reforestation masses, 6.9 hectares of natural masses and 6.20 hectares that occupy the forest house and the nursery, in which The environment has improved.

Discontinuities were also carried out in wooded forest masses to improve their stability and increase primary productivity, as well as to provoke a diversification of vegetation in the mass that guarantees the promotion of improved natural systems with the presence of new vegetal typologies.

To avoid processes of natural colonization of the forest mass in these spaces and to promote the protection of the soil was carried out the planting of herbaceous of low coverage, in order to obtain natural prairies or mountain pastures.

These spaces will improve the quality of the natural system as a whole.
